Assignment 7A - Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1
Texting and Driving Prevention
·
Opportunity:
o
Millions of people across the nation are deciding
to text on the phone while also operating their vehicle, which is eventually causing
people to get into car accidents and kill others.
§
The who: People of driving age across the
globe
§
The what: texting on their cellular devices while
driving
§
The why: People don’t want to use or purchase
a Bluetooth option for their vehicle
·
Testing the who: Texting and driving is
committed by people all across the globe. According to a CNN article, other
countries have stricter laws to avoid the opportunity for car accidents and
deaths from people who are texting in driving. For example, 32 countries have
banned texting and driving to prevent further issues related to driving. (https://www.cnn.com/2017/03/24/health/distracted-driving-laws-global-countries/index.html)
·
Testing the what: If people were to purchase
or use a Bluetooth program while they were driving, it would alleviate drivers
with road rage, allow for less car accidents, and less people losing their lives
to distracted drivers.
·
Testing the why: I personally cannot tell you
why people text and drive. Personally, I never text and drive because I am always
cautious of the other drivers on the road. Even though I do not have Bluetooth capabilities
in my car, I do pull over to answer important texts or phone calls.
·
Interview #1:
o
I interviewed a 55-year-old woman who is a single
mom to a young adult. She informed me that she does not text and drive because
she does not want to endanger herself or her daughter. The mother did note that
she notices many drivers text and drive in today’s era, but the issue has grown
more with the younger generations. I asked the mother if her car supports
Bluetooth capabilities and she stated that her car came with Bluetooth and that
she uses it every time she drives.
·
Interview #2:
o
I interviewed an 18-year-old female college
student that lives off campus and travels for class. She stated that she does
not text or operate her phone while driving her vehicle, but she does use her phone
while she is at stop lights. I asked her if her car has Bluetooth capabilities
and she stated that it does, and she uses it all the time.
·
Interview #3:
o
I interviewed an 18-year-old male college
student that lives off campus and drives to class. He stated that he does text
and drive, even though he knows that it is very bad. I asked him if his car has
Bluetooth capabilities and he stated yes, but he does not use it. He did tell
me that he wants to start using the Bluetooth in his car to prevent car
accidents.
·
Interview #4:
o
I interviewed a 51-year-old male who is a husband
to three children. He does text and drive with the kids in the car, which is a
serious problem. He does realize that this is a serious issue that needs to be
fixed. He did mention that his vehicle does not support Bluetooth capabilities,
but it is something that he wants to look into so that he is not forced to text
and drive all the time.
·
Interview #5:
o
I interviewed a 30-year-old female who is a nurse.
She recently purchased a new car with Bluetooth capabilities and is satisfied
with her driving. “As soon as I get into the car, my iPhone connects to the Bluetooth
in the car so I can make texts and calls while driving if necessary. I really
enjoy using the Bluetooth on my commute to work so I can communicate with my
husband and co-workers while on-the-go. I wish all cars came with Bluetooth
capabilities”.
·
Given
your interviews, what do you know about the opportunity that you didn't know
before?
o
Something interesting that I learned while
conducting the interviews is that most new cars come with Bluetooth already built-in,
making it a lot more user friendly to the people who want to use it immediately.
It doesn’t force you to use it, but it does make it easier to use so you don’t have
to purchase anything else.
o
A lot of people have cars that come with
Bluetooth, and either don’t know how to use it or just don’t want to use it.
This shows that more information on texting-and-driving related car accidents need
to be released to the public so they realize how much of a problem it is.
Alexandra, you selected an opportunity that is becoming far more prevalent than in recent years. I applaud you for picking this problem we have in our society and diving into the root of the issue in your interviews. I specifically liked the interview you had with the 18 year old male that lives off campus on his texting and driving state -- his answer just depicts how our generation X is not aware of the dangers that texting and driving causes.
ReplyDeleteHi Alexandra,
ReplyDeleteI think you chose a very important issue for your opportunity. Many people get into fatal car accidents from texting and driving. I found it interesting that the father you interviewed admitted that he would text and drive while driving his children around. It is great that most new cars come with Bluetooth capability. This means that they recognize the issue of drivers being on their phone while driving.
