Assignment 6A - Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends

·      Economic Trend: Feds holding off on Interest Rate Increase until June 2019
o   I believe that this is an opportunity because it allows people to borrow money earlier in the year without having to pay the extreme interest rate increase. Holding off on the interest rate increase would allow more people to either a) make large purchases, such as a car, a house, a mortgage, etc., or b) it would allow people to pay off objects that require them to pay interest, such as student loans, mortgages, etc.
o   The prototypical customer is someone in day-to-day life that has expenses that they need to pay off, especially while the interest rate is still low. This affects a wide range of people across the nation.
o   I think this is relatively easy to exploit, but only until June of 2019 since the interest rate will be considerably low until then.
o   I saw this as an opportunity because as a student dealing with financial debt throughout my college years, it is important to pay the interest on student loans while the percentage is still low.

·      Economic Trend: The cannabis business is booming-but that’s not necessarily good if you’re an investor
o   I believe that this is a huge opportunity as the legalization of marijuana continues to grow across all 50 states. Allowing such a useful medical tool to grow the economy through stocks creates a huge profit to people who purchase medical marijuana stocks. Throughout recent years, medical marijuana stocks have grown to be an economic trend for many people who have decided to invest.
o   The prototypical customer is someone who is willing to pay money to purchase these cannabis stocks. Once you purchase this specific stock, the chances of you losing your money over time is very small, compared to the riskier stocks that are also available for purchase.
o   I believe that this economic trend is extremely easy to exploit. With more people getting involved in marijuana for medicinal use, it has allowed for more closed-minded people to realize that this form of cannabis is helping more people on a day-to-day basis.
o   I saw this as an opportunity because the chances of you losing money on medical marijuana is slim-to-none with the industry growing every single day.

·      Regulatory changes: Alachua County raises tobacco buying age to 21
o   I believe that this is a great opportunity that exists. With more high school and middle school students getting involved in vaping, this regulatory change would allow children to not become addicted to the nicotine that is used when making vape juice.
o   The prototypical customers are Alachua county adults above the age of 21 who are trying to find a way to quit smoking cigarettes. Vaping allows adults to lower their nicotine intake, so they are no longer dependent on smoking the harmful ingredients in cigarettes.
o   This regulatory change is very easy to exploit as more parents have become concerned that their child is vaping while at school. Also, adults do not want to see children getting involved in bad habits, such as smoking or vaping.
o   I saw this as an opportunity because middle schools and high schools are having problems cracking down on kids who are vaping while they are at school, so this regulatory change would be a great benefit to schools across Alachua county. Also, I believe that parents across Alachua county would be happier if it was more difficult to purchase vape products.

·      Regulatory changes: Paid sick leave and minimum wage policies at local and state levels
o   I believe that this is an opportunity exists, because it would help with unemployment rates across the nation. This would especially be helpful in Alachua County with the amount of homeless people that reside within the county boundaries.
o   The prototypical customers are people who are business owners within a state that is increasing its minimum wage. Business owners are willing to allow the increase of minimum wage if this allows them to have more employees, which, in turn, would hopefully generate more revenue.
o   This regulatory change would be slightly more difficult to exploit than the other changes and trends because there are also people who are against the increase of minimum wage. This is an issue that has many pros and cons, but it all depends on what the locals and states decide to pass into law.
o   I saw this as an opportunity as I am a college student. Increasing the minimum wage would be helpful to college students across the nation as it would allow them to make more money, and hopefully pay off their student loans and debts a lot quicker than a lower minimum wage.

  1. Hi Alexandra!

I was very impressed with how well thought out your response was and how much detail you put into it. I found it interesting that most of the blogs I read included points about the marijuana business. This must be a prevalent issue, as I was too, almost about to use an article for one of my changes. You did everything you were required to do and I have no constructive feedback!
